Looking Forward to...

the remainder of 2014.

We are well into summer now, back to school supply sales are already in full swing around here, and I feel that this is a perfect time to reflect on what I would like to accomplish during the latter half of this year.

Back in the beginning of the year, I signed up for a few monthly things such as ALYOF, and A Handmade Christmas Challenge. I haven't managed to keep up with them, some are just larger projects than I am ready for, such as the Delightful Stars Quilt Along. I've also been participating in blog hops with Mdm. Samm of Sew We Quilt. Totally loving those! These hops have been helping me to stretch creatively and as they are so much fun, I feel totally up to the challenge of making something new for each one. So much creative talent and lovely ladies cheering each other on. Love you all!

In addition to the blog hops, I've been considering some types of projects and goals I would like to work towards achieving for the end of 2014. I'm hoping to work more realistically both time and ability-wise, in order to better manage my creative time and energy.

I have been working on a re-org of my sewing, dare I call it a, studio. Really, that is a post in itself, as it is a major project, just don't expect any fancy gingham wall painting like Mdm Samm, my walls are chip board, but you'll have to wait and see LOL.

This year, I wanted to learn how to knit them and to actually complete a pair of hand knitted socks. Until now I had started two different pairs. The first pair is also in this post, and the second pair are here. I was almost finished sock 1 of the first pair when I discovered a big error. I put them aside and started the second pair. Ha, half way through sock 1 I discovered a dropped stitch, so, I frogged and began again. I have no idea how to find a dropped stitch let alone how to fix it...so, it was frogged, and I restarted the sock as it knits up pretty straightforwardly. Ha ha, I dropped a stitch again somewhere about the same place, put it aside and moved onto something else. My patience just wasn't there to deal with it, and this is supposed to be fun not frustrating, right?!

So, cleaning my studio the other day, I came across sock number 1, still on the needles, put my foot in and fell in love. Frog city, frogged yarn is not pretty, but...forging ahead! I decided to start two socks at one time and to do so many rounds on the first sock, and then to follow up with same on second sock. Now this is fun! They will both be finished around the same time, Oh, and I found a friend at my quilt guild who knits so next time I get into trouble, I have someone to ask for help. Yay! Fewer frogs here, I'm hoping. Sorry, no sneaky peakys today!

This post is getting long, but I've also always wanted to knit a sweater, a cardigan to be exact. With craftsy's flash sale, I joined the class called "My First Sweater" with Amy Ross. She has a lovely voice and such a pretty face. The laced with gray hair in a bun, glasses, and clothing, and she truly could be my sister LOL

Oh, I just love it! I've printed off the materials, and I know I've got enough yarn in my stash to do this. Yay!!

So these are my two main knitting projects that I want to work towards for the remainder of 2014. I'm gonna keep thinking about and working on the various things I'm involved in and will update my "Wanna Do" page as I figure things out. Well, lunch will be ready in a few minutes and mmmm I am hungry.

Breakfast Time

It is such a beautiful morning here that I just cannot help but sit outdoors and enjoy my breakfast. I also have a few knitted dishcloth patterns to catch up on so now is as good a time as any while the house is still quiet.

Coffee in my newest favourite mug, and spelt toast with sunflower seed butter. Someone I know and love will be receiving a similar mug very soon *wink*.

This is my catch-up knitting of the day. Pattern: Floral Eyelet Cloth in Bernat Handicrafter: Creamsicle (makes me think more of candy corn).

Have an awesome Monday morning!

A Difficult Goodbye...

It is with difficulty and with sadness that I announce the passing of my mother yesterday morning.

I have thoroughly enjoyed helping to care for her in the nursing home where she spent the last two years of her life. The staff were very loving and of immense support all during this time.

Thank your Lord for giving this time to me...I know that not everyone gets it, and I am very grateful for the love and nurturing I was able to give her during such a dependant stage in her life.

We are all well here, and loving and supporting each other. Thank you for understanding my absence at this time.

Love to you all, be back soon.

A Poem

received, I do not know the author, but it is very appropriate for me today.

I was regretting the past

And fearing the future.
Suddenly my Lord was speaking:
“My NAME is I AM.”
He paused.
I waited.  He continued.

“When you live in the past with its mistakes
and regrets, it is hard.  I am not there.”
My name is not…I WAS.

“When you live in the future, with its problems
and fears, it is hard.  I am not there.”
My name is not…I WILL BE.

“When you live in this moment…
It is not hard.  I am here.
My name is…I AM.”

Alzheimer's and Dementia

are mean, spiteful, degrading, and don't play fair; but I am blessed to know that God is in control and uses everything to the good. Some times if you look hard you will see the good, and other times you just have to accept that God knows best.

I am still praying to receive the peace that surpasses all understanding. With God's grace only, will I/we one day receive it.

Thank you for my moment of rambling...we return now to our regular programming LOL

Tomorrow, Wednesday February 12 is the start of the Hugs and Kisses Hop. I am so looking forward to seeing and showing. Hope you can join us!

Goodnight Irene ~ January check-in

Well, incredibly, we are mid-January already. Had a really difficult time trying to decide upon fabric for this project. My local Fabricville barely has fat quarters never mind jellyrolls, charm packs or any other lovely precuts. My local fabric store Club Tissus had no charm packs and only a single Stonehenge jellyroll. Being a newbie quilter I really don't want to spend a fortune on fabric (just yet LOL). So what's a girl to do?

I went to Walmart (more than once) hoping for a little variety and finally bought this fabric. It's not something I would normally have chosen, but for a quilty education, it is more than adequate. Best of all it was cheap affordable.

In future, if I cannot find what I want available locally, I will be purchasing online. There is some fabulous fabric out there if I just look for it (and can make a decision - so many lovelies!)

Okay, back on track. We were to make up 5 blocks...3 patches and 2 x's...here they are!

This was a jellyroll from Walmart. Good solid cotton fabric (a nice weight to it, and not see through), just not a bunch I would have put together. My aim is to improve my accuracy, but I sure am enjoying this SAL.

Thank you Terry of Terry's Treasures...where I will be linking up...this is lots of fun! In Terry's right hand sidebar is the link up to see more of the wonderful work of other participants...well worth a few moments time!

My List of Smalls 2014

It was brought to my attention as a good idea to list the projects I wish to accomplish for the Smalls 2014 SAL.

http://stitchinglotus.ca/smalls-sal/

So, in no particular order:

1. Port-a-Potty
2. I (heart) (heart) Gallifrey
3. a) Princess of Perpetual Projects
    b) Queen of Procrastination
4. Stork scissors square fob
5. Stork biscornu
6. (a) Stork scissors case
    (b) Stork needle case
7. Sorry Gone Stitchin
8.Rejoice, Rejoice O Christian
9. Give Thanks
10. A Trifle from a Friend
11. Adore Him
12. Autumn Blessings
Extra: Count Your Blessings (in case I feel a need for a change in my lineup or...incredibly so if I find myself with extra time on my hands LOL)

If during any particular month I have the time to complete two of the projects, then I will double up and add another project to the queue. I've been wanting to do the stork items for some time so by adding them to this list, God willing, they will become a reality this year.

TUSAL - January 1

http://itsdaffycat.blogspot.ca/2013/12/the-totally-useless-stitch-long-2014.html

This is my first ever posting for TUSAL...visit here for full explanation of what is considered an ORT and also to understand the fun and silliness of this stitch-along. I plan to save my ORTs for the birds later this Spring...and the rest that is accumulated for next Spring.

I have been tossing my threads into the trash because I've been so hit and miss with my sewing, BUT, have you seen the projects I have signed myself up for? I'm going to be very busy this year...learning, sewing, knitting, and other miscellaneous stitching. Yay!

So, without further ado, here is my ORT jar for January 1. Empty, but that is only because I have been trashing my beautiful cast off threads...new year, new jar...a clean slate.

Here are the 2014 TUSAL posting dates...they fall on the "new moon".

Friday "On The Needles"

link up with Judy Laquidara at Patchwork Times

graphic courtesy of: http://static.aanbodpagina.nl/img/473/cursus-breien-voor-beginners-gem-emmen.jpg

I'm wanting to do some charity sewing and knitting this year. I'm starting out without a concrete plan, but plenty of ideas. Will fill you in as things evolve. For the time being, here is my progress of knitting preemie hat and bootie sets from my yarn stash...

This is actually the 3rd size hat on the needles, with booties for the second size don't but not pictured here. The little "pile" is the smallest size hat and booties. I'm not really keen on sewing them up so I'm not sure when they will actually be complete. lol

Who'll sing with me today?

The Curious Quilter has done it again...more fun songs to share with you.

Let Me Sew! Sung to the tune of Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!

Oh the pattern I’ve picked is striking,
The fabric to my liking,
It’s washed and all set to go.
Let me sew! Let me sew! Let me sew!

I intend to have fun while cutting,
My skills I will be strutting.
On to piecing I’ll gladly go,
Let me sew! Let me sew! Let me sew!

When I’m finished with this new quilt,
On some old UFO’s I will start.
But for now I will feel no guilt,
I’m happy to practice my art.

My seams I will soon be pressing,
My blocks will be progressing.
My smile, how it will glow.
Let me sew! Let me sew! Let me sew!

Joy to the World! Sung to the tune of Joy to the World!

Joy to the World, the gifts are done!
I sewed for several months.
Beneath our Christmas tree
Wrapped gifts as you can see.
There’s mug rugs for my friend,
An apron for Aunt Den,
And doll clothes I made for someone’s Barbie and Ken!

Joy to the World, it’s gifting time!
Let friends and families share.
That fabric full of geese
I quilted for my niece.
I hope she’ll like it a lot,
I think she’ll like it a lot,
I know, I know—she’ll like it lots!

Joy to the World, they’re finally here!
I’m ready for their hugs.
The toddlers look so fine
In hand-stitched clothes—divine!
Eight quilted gifts I see
Waiting underneath my tree.
Tomorrow, tomorrow I’ll sew for me!

John 1 (KJV)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Charity

I've been looking for an outlet for my creativity. I enjoy knitting, sewing, and now I'm developing a love for quilting. And while gift giving is fun...I'm looking for yet another direction. I feel called to help, but up until now, I was not sure in just what direction.

I think I may have found my outlet...

http://teenytears.blogspot.ca/

..."Teeny Tears is a service organization that provides tiny flannel diapers at no charge to hospitals and bereavement support organizations for families that have suffered the loss of a preemie or micropreemie child through stillbirth or NICU loss. ..."

Here's why...several years ago I met some new ladies through the pastor's wife. I was a cub scout leader, and I had him come to speak to our pack so that they could earn their world religion badges. This meeting completely changed the direction of my own life, but that is another story, and from this meeting, I met with his wife...just because she seemed nice. As a mom of three children, she and some other ladies got together weekly to walk and to enjoy each other's company while their children played together. At one of these get togethers (I only went to one), I met another lady there who was early on in her first pregnancy.

A few months later, I learned that this lady lost her baby. Having met this woman only once...I felt strangely compelled to knit and mail her a prayer cloth. Nothing much, but a little hug. My name meant nothing to her and the church ladies told her where she had met me...and through them I learned that this little cloth was the only thing she had to remember her child; and that she was very grateful for it. I've never seen nor heard from this lady again...but I remember feeling very blessed that I had given her some kind of comfort in her hour of need.

I've never done anything else since then...except the quilt for my sister-in-law; but I love this new-to-me organization. I found them online one night last week when I couldn't sleep. If you are interested in knowing more about them, I will encourage you to visit their site...but be prepared if you begin to look at the photos and read their stories. I could not stop reading, and I spent a good four hours tearing and at times sobbing for their losses.

I'm sure you will see more stories here about Teeny Tears...I'm hoping to find a local hospital where I can make my own donations. I'm sure it will not be difficult to turn some of my learn as I go quilt blocks into mini quilts for donation.

Newest Household Purchase

Well, we have been talking about this for a few years now, and finally did something about it. Let's see if you can guess what we did...

On Monday, we had a friend of ours come in and install some ceramic tiles.

The dining room became a bit chilly because we had to turn off and remove the electric baseboard heater to make room for these tiles. You can see the small electric heater we plugged in to help dry the tiles overnight...

Tuesday morning, I washed down all the tiles in preparation...please note that they are not yet grouted...nor will they be right away.

Tuesday afternoon, the next stage began. What have they done to my wall??!! Betcha just guessed what we are doing here now!

Yup, we are making a hole to the great outdoors. Yes, that is snow you see through the portal. We are turning our house into a submarine LOL.

Of course not, we are having a wood burning stove installed. And even better, it has an oven on top! This is a J.A. Roby Atmosphere stove with oven. And I am so, super excited. I can't wait to bake bread in this baby over the winter! It will also be just perfect for keeping hubby's supper warm waiting for him to get home LOL

My first time lighting this stove (about 6 p.m. Tuesday) taught me a lesson about the flue. Yes, it is supposed to be open when first starting to catch the paper and kindling, and it is also best if the door is not fully latched to allow a bit more air intake so that the smoke goes up the chimney and not into the house. I love the smell of wood smoke but you could have cut this with a knife...and I did prove that my stairwell smoke detector does work very well.

Once everything started burning nicely, we enjoyed the flames for a while but about 11 p.m. I put on the last big log and shut the flue down for the night.

About 5 a.m. (this morning) I opened the flue to see if there was anything left, because there were no flames or embers to be seen through the window...and lo and behold there was plenty of embers left. I know it is best to open the flue and let everything catch back on fire (if there is anything), because if I open the door first, I risk a back draft and any flames will come out the door towards me instead of up the chimney) Once safe, I just added more wood and it is burning nicely again.

So, now today, we are busy changing rooms (living and dining), but I will leave that for another day once we figure it all out. We could just as easily revert it all back, it would not be the first time. LOL

I have wanted a wood stove forever. One that I can cook on should the electricity go out. I do not like pellet stoves, and hubby does not like the price of propane. Since this house is not made for a cookstove (which I would absolutely love)...this is what I got instead. I am in seventh heaven! and toasty warm too! Harpo and I had a little catnap in front of the woodstove last night. Mmmmmm. Scrumptious!

My newest friend...

This is my newest toy. The Husqvarna Opal 670. I've never had a computerized type of machine and it is soooooo much fun.

And, as I was recently bitten by the quilting bug, I also got a walking foot. Yay! That quilt I was working on for my sil went through this like butter. No strain at all!

And speaking of the quilt, here is the finished product.

I also played with the fonts, and added her name and all the first initials of the family here.

I got a bit hurried here, and it shows, but I absolutely had to get this mailed off today. As it is, with the holiday, it won't arrive there before Wednesday. Still...it feels so good to be completed.

Here is a closeup of the binding. Funny I didn't take a photo of the back of the quilt.
So that is one gift complete, and I sure had lots of fun making this lap quilt. Much love and prayer went into the making of this little quilt. I sure hope she feels even just a smidgen of it each time she puts this quilt on her lap.

Now that this is done, I have begun working in earnest on my pincushion(s) for the upcoming blog hop. Nope, no peaking :-)  Unless things change, my date to show is September 13th, so it really isn't far away.

Pilgrim's Progress & Project 119 Update

I have to admit to being stuck at the halfway mark in this book. I have not read any further in it since my last update. I will finish it but, I'm honestly just not sure when I will pick it up again. I was once a voracious reader, these days I seem to prefer blogging entertainment. I used to get a new book and if it were really good, I would stay up all night and read it through to the end...into the next day even if it were that long. But, those days are gone...they ended 10 years ago when my son was in kindergarten. Plus, I like more variety in my reading these days. I like to start several books simultaneously and switch back and forth as the desire hits me. Not sure whether this is a good thing LOL.

Thanks Elyssa for the challenge, sorry I just wasn't up to completing in in the time allotted.

*******************************************************

I'm just not committed to this project. I'm still on the second verse even. This saddens me, but I think it just goes to show that this particular project is just not for me. I originally thought this was a really cool idea, and that the challenge aspect would lend me a sense of accountability...this has just not been the case. Don't get me wrong, I still want/need to memorize verse, just not this Psalm in its entirety at this point in my life.

Pilgrim's Progress RAL

While I was whizzing along in the first few chapters, they certainly became meatier as I continued reading. I read only for as long as I was able to concentrate and really digest as I read. I developed early on in life the bad habit of reading fast and skimming fluff...suffice to say there is none of that in this book.

Chapter 1-4

"I am condemned to die, and after that to come to judgment; and I find that I am not willing to do the first, nor able to do the second."

It is difficult to believe that no matter the wonderful promises of God and everlasting life, we still hold on to this one. With the ridicule and harsh words against us by those who do not believe. Coming to judgment is a scary affair. No matter how good I may be, there are many things for which I will be judged...shamefully, yet rightfully so.

There are many out there in our life who would like to persuade us not to follow the Christian path. Not out of malice, but out of misunderstanding or ignorance...friends, family, strangers. It is difficult to leave friends, family, and familiar ways behind. We really stick out when we do these things.

Like me, have you ever found yourself in the Slough of Despond? It is a very nasty place, and so easy to get yourself turned around in...like a white out during a blizzard where you cannot see your hand in front of your face and you dare not move in any direction, and yet you dare not remain still.

I like when Christian was told by Goodwill in Chapter 2: "Thou mayest distinguish the right from the wrong, the right only being straight and narrow." This suggests a serious focus.

Christian asks the Man in the Iron Cage: "For what did you bring yourself into this condition?"

The Man in the Iron Cage responds: "For the desires, pleasures, and gains of this world; in the enjoyment of which I did then promise myself much delight; but now every one of those things also bite me, and gnaw me, like a burning worm."

I like in chapter 3 where Christian says to Mistrust: "To go back is nothing but death; to go forward is fear of death, and life everlasting beyond it. I will yet go forward." I have had thoughts like this. To stop living the Christian life is to go back to death. To continue living the Christian life is fear of death...fear of all the sorrows, the roaring lions, the wolves in sheep's clothing, but perseverance achieves life everlasting and so I continue on the straight and narrow path.

On more than one occasion I have fallen asleep, and had to retrace my steps. It is a worrisome affair!

Did you like the part where Porter talks to Christian about the lions. About how the lions are chained and are placed there for the trial of faith where it is, and for the finding out of those that have none. This is a really beautiful example of how God is in control of everything, and how he will let nothing harm us. It also shows how he tests us to help us learn about ourselves and to grow in our walk with Him.

"Jael slew Sisera", I am not familiar with this story. I had to search it out and found it in Judges 5:20 or with Shamgar, also in Judges. Guess I need to familarize myself with this particular chapter. Hmmm.

If I had to choose one thing that most spoke to me as I read, it was the following words found in Chapter 4 from the Valley of Shadow of Death: "...one of the wicked ones got behind him, and stepped up softly to him, and whisperingly suggested many wicked words to him, which he verily thought had proceeded from his own mind. This put Christian more to it than anything he had met with before, even to think that he should now speak evil of Him that he had so much loved before." "...but he had not the wisdom either to stop his ears, or to know from whence those wicked words came."

Sometimes it is hard to know whether the voice or thoughts in your head are actually your own. Those little tempting thoughts, encouraging you to do what you know is wrong. Read that book, watch that immoral program, don't come to a full stop at the stop sign because there is no one there....

This book is so meaty, that I am going to stop my comments here. My thoughts on the remaining chapter contents of Part 1, are very unformulated. I'm not sure that I will blog any further comments on my reading done to date, but I will continue with my reading into Part 2 in an effort to complete my RAL on time or not too far off my designated end date of August 9, but I will be reading this again. Perhaps this Fall once my routine returns more to normal with the start of school for my son and for us when the sun sets earlier. I think I will purchase a copy with notes, but I'm undecided if I want a paper copy or ebook copy. I still prefer a paper copy...guess that shows my age :)

Project 119

Whoo boy, I am incredibly behind. I have memorized the first verse only.

Psalm 119: 1 Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.

I have not kept up with using Scripture Typer, and really just not had the focus to memorize. I will get back to this.

And we're off...

Today is the beginning of the Pilgrim's Progress read along. I have opted for the free kindle version...

Product Details

My kindle for pc has no consecutive page numbers, and may be even more confusing as I switch back and forth between reading on my pc and reading on my Kobo e-reader so I'm setting my tentative reading schedule by chapter.

Part 1:
     Week 1: chapters 1 - 4
     Week 2: chapters 5 - 8
     Week 3: chapters 9 - conclusion
Part 2:
     Week 4: chapters 1 - 4
     Week 5: chapters 5 - 8
Week 6  chapters 9 - the little pilgrim

I am also listening to free podcasts from Still Waters Revival Books as found on iTunes. There are many different free versions available.

I'm really excited to be reading this book; finally :0)
I will try to maintain some discussion over at Unscripted as I am able.

Also begun today

Began memorizing Psalm 119:1 and 2 today. Progress so far is encouraging. Love that the verses in this Psalm are, I believe, all one liners (giggle) and therefore provide me with a quicker retention than some other verses.

Scripture Memorization

Project119button

Found an interesting idea on a new-to-me blog. Memorize Psalm 119 over the next 11 months with 16 verses learned per month. Quite a daunting challenge, but hey why not give it a go.

This challenge begins July 1st...four days left to prepare.
